1. Goal: Build Awareness

Objectives:

1. Enhance public awareness of respiratory diseases, sleep disorders, and critical illnesses
2. Expand public and governmental respect for scientific research
3. Secure greater public, patient, corporate, payer, quality-improvement organization, and governmental awareness of the ATS
4. Assist the empowerment of patients in advocacy
5. Develop programs to enhance patient self-care
6. Inform primary care clinicians of ATS programs

2. Goal: Collaborate with Organizations

Objectives:

1. Engage professional organizations, governmental agencies, and public interest organizations in the areas of respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine through education, research, clinical care, and advocacy.

3. Goal: Disseminate Knowledge

Objectives:

1. Develop electronic resources for research and clinical education
2. Integrate and coordinate our publications portfolio
3. Optimize conference and course portfolios
4. Drive the rapid implementation of new knowledge into clinical practice

4. Goal: Enhance Membership

Objectives

1. Enhance retention and recruitment of In-training and In-transition members
2. Increase membership of clinician and researcher professionals
3. Expand mentoring programs
4. Enhance membership benefits
5. Develop more effective marketing of membership benefits
6. Develop a membership category for “Friends of the ATS”—for interested lay persons and for professionals who are not candidates for regular membership

5. Goal: Grow Research

Objectives:

1. Expand ATS-funded and co-funded pulmonary, critical care and sleep research
2. Promote public awareness of the value of and need for research
3. Ensure adequate Federal, State, and Local support for research
4. Secure sufficient resources for training of investigators
5. Study methods for promoting the rapid translation of new discoveries into improved clinical care

6. Goal: Meet the Needs for Clinicians

Objectives:

1. Develop and assist in implementation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
2. Contribute to the development of quality and safety standards
3. Assist the development of healthcare resource allocation and reimbursement strategies
4. Establish clearly defined public health policy positions
5. Investigate and develop clinical systems to improve patient safety
6. Introduce health information technology and decision support tools for clinical practice
7. Contribute to the accelerated translation of research into patient care
8. Promote models to meet clinician workforce needs in pulmonary/critical care/sleep medicine
9. Expand opportunities for CME and competency-based training

7. Goal: Optimize Organizational Structure

Objectives:

1. Improve communication between and among Assemblies
2. Improve the integration and coordination of Committee activities and inter-committee communication
3. Streamline governance structure
4. Reduce operating costs
5. Align Staff structure with organizational goals and objectives to ensure completion of action plans

8. Goal: Partner with Patients

Objectives:

1. Enhance services and resources for patients and families
2. Develop partnerships for advocacy
3. Design collaborative partnerships to enhance public awareness of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep disorders, of the needs of patients with these disorders, and of the Vision and Goals of the ATS
4. Develop partnerships to support research funding
5. Design strategies to allow participation of patients in ATS governance

9. Goal: Revenue Diversification

Objectives:

1. Identify and promote effective enduring products that implement ATS official document recommendations
2. Identify new revenue streams from ATS publications
3. Secure Conference-related revenue opportunities
4. Continue ethical relationships with Industry
5. Develop a Web-based revenue strategy
6. Develop organizational “home” to examine on an ongoing basis new and novel revenue opportunities
7. Work with the ATS Foundation to increase support for research, education and training

10. Goal: Strengthen Advocacy

Objectives:

1. Champion policies that will ensure an adequate clinical workforce
2. Define and strengthen ethical principles for professional societies that advance science and patient care
3. Improve the environment of care for providers and patients
4. Secure an expansion of the research workforce
5. Enhance research funding
6. Be a leader in the development of health care policy that advances respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine
7. Develop a grass roots approach to advocacy that includes members, patients, and families
