Areas of Suggested Research
-
Optimal frequency of tube changes
-
Factors involved in tube degradation
-
Optimal frequency of tracheostomy ties and
selection factors
-
Cleaning and reusing suction catheters
Despite the widespread use of tracheostomies in the
pediatric population, there is surprisingly little scientific data
available to support various clinical practices. These are some of
the areas that were identified as particularly in need of or
amenable to research.
-
Optimal use of humidity
-
Pharmacokinetics of inhaled medications via a
tracheostomy
-
Utility and timing of surveillance
bronchoscopies
-
Role of home monitoring devices
These are the additional specific topics where more
research is needed.
It is the expectation of the consensus panel members that these
guidelines will generate discussion and critical evaluation of
current practice in caring for children with tracheostomies.
Additionally, it is hoped that these recommendations will lead to
specific change of practice which incorporates these guidelines and
stimulates research which promotes a more scientific base for
practice
