2010 International Trainee Travel AwardCall For Applications
The International Lung Health and Membership Committees of the AmericanThoracic Society (ATS) are pleased to announce the availability of the ATSInternational Trainee Travel Award (ITTA), which provides travel funds forinternational trainees to attend the ATS International Conference in New Orleans, May 2010.Each ITTA award includes a certificate of achievement, a check in the amount of$1,925.00 (U.S.), and oneyear’s In-Training Membership, which currently costs $75.00 (US) commencingon 1 July 2010.
An eligible applicant for the ITTA will be a co-author on an abstract(s)accepted for presentation at the ATS 2010 International Conference, and whomeets the requirements listed below. The awards will be based on the quality ofscience, the contribution of the trainee to the work, and likelihood of futurecontributions to the field. These awards are made possible through support fromthe American Thoracic Society.
The purpose of these awards is to interest international trainees in activemembership in the American Thoracic Society. At the 2010 InternationalConference, trainees will be exposed to the state of the art in basic andclinical research and practice of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.In addition to these educational opportunities, trainees will be able toparticipate in the ATS Assemblies and network with global leaders in allrespiratory related scientific and medical fields.

Application requirements for this award are:
- Eligible Applicant will be a Trainee who is not at a U.S. or Canadian program at the time of application and not a U.S. or Canadian citizen.
- Eligible applicants are trainees who are students, residents, fellows (holders of MD or PhD degrees) or equivalent, and with a preference given to those who have never attended the International Conference and had not previously received an ITTA.
- Eligible Applicant must be an author on an abstract accepted for presentation at the International Conference.
- Eligible Applicant must submit the following by January 31, 2010 using the standard application form:
- Completed application form. Must be typed and signed by bothapplicant and sponsor or else it will not be accepted. Signatures thatare typed are not acceptable.
- A copy of the abstractaccepted for presentation at the 2010 ATS International Conference.
- CV (limited to 2 pagesbased on career aspects of work in accepted IC abstract)
- A brief (≤1 page)personal statement including a description of relevant trainingexperience, research and career goals
- Letter of support fromtheir sponsor indicating:
- the contribution of the applicant to the research project and
- why the candidate would be a worthy recipient of the travel award
- Awardees must be able to attend the International Scholars Poster Colloquium and Discussion on May 15, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm and their respective ATS assembly business meeting.

Application Guidelines
PURPOSE
The goals of the International Trainee Travel Award (ITTA) of the AmericanThoracic Society (ATS) are: to provide trainees from outside the US and Canadawith an opportunity to present their research at the ATS InternationalConference (IC); to create opportunities for interactions between internationaltrainees and other scientists in their area of research; and to encourage thetrainees to become full members of ATS, with active participation in theirassemblies.
CRITERIA

The applicant must be an author on an abstract accepted for presentation at the 2010 ATS IC.
- At the time of the application, the applicant must be a trainee who is a student, resident, fellow (holders of MD or PhD degrees) or equivalent, at a program located outside of the United States and Canada.
- The applicant must NOT be a citizen of the United States or Canada.
- The applicant must not be the recipient of another travel award at the 2010 ATS IC.
PROCEDURE
- Applicant must submit a complete Application Packet by January 31, 2010.
- Applicant may submit a complete Application Packet either by email or fax (not both!):

Each applicant will be notified when his/her application has been receivedand is complete.
Applicant must include the following (in this order only) inthe complete Application Packet:
- Completed application form. Must be typed and signed by both applicant and sponsor or else it will not be accepted. Signatures that are typed are not acceptable (ie, Training Director).
- A copy of the abstract accepted for presentation at the 2010 ATS International Conference.
- CV (limited to 2 pages based on career aspects of work in accepted IC abstract)

- Letter of support from their sponsor indicating:
- the contribution of the applicant to the research project and
- why the candidate would be a worthy recipient of the travel award
Applications will ONLY be accepted if:
- Application form is typed, not handwritten.
- Application packets must be faxed or emailed, not both. Please only send 1 email or 1 fax.
- Packets must be submitted in the following order: completed application form, copy of accepted abstract, CV, personal statement, and letter of support.
- Emailed application packets must be sent in PDF formatting, no other formats (*doc, *gif, *jpeg, ect) will be accepted.
- Application form must be physically signed by both applicant and sponsor. Digital signatures are not valid.
- Application must be submitted by January 31, 2010, 5 pm EST USA. No late applications will be accepted.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
